RealNetworks Buys Dutch Game Company

RealNetworks, Inc., has announced that it has acquired Zylom Media Group BV, a premier distributor, developer and publisher of high-quality PC-based casual games throughout Europe, adding to a stable of "casual" computer games that is contributing a steadily growing share of the company's revenues.

The transaction valued at up to $21 million or euro 17.2 million; acquisition of Zylom Media Group will push RealNetworks heavily into the European market, matching a similar casual game push in the United States during the past two years. Real is the leading provider in the U.S. of downloadable PC casual games.

UK Cable Co. NTL Signs BitTorrent File-Sharing Deal

NTL, the largest broadband provider in the United Kingdom, will be testing the file-swapping service that will let users purchase movies and music video more cheaply than traditional downloads.

The trial, which will also include another technology company from Cambridge, England-based CacheLogic Ltd., comes as BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen works to establish the software as a legitimate means of distributing content; it will add its data-caching technology to improve the network's efficiency.

Geography is irrelevant, and telecoms providers cannot charge users hefty premiums for overseas calls.

New Symantec Shield Aims To Repel Microsoft

Symantec plans to introduce a security product later this year that will take on Microsoft's forthcoming Windows OneCare and Vista security technology.

The software, code-named "Genesis," will integrate components of Symantec's current security, PC optimization and backup products, the security company said. It will be sold on a subscription basis and will require an initial one-year agreement. Pricing has not yet been determined.

America Online and Yahoo Inc. will begin charging businesses to send commercial e-mail to its users in the first wide-scale use of authenticated e-mail to reduce spam. But some marketers affected by the plan, set to start in several weeks, call it e-mail taxation designed to create a new stream of revenue for the two.

The Internet companies say that this will help them identify legitimate mail and cut down on junk e-mail, identity-theft scams and other scourges that plague users of their services. The two companies stand to earn millions of dollars a year from the system if it is widely adopted.
