Yahoo Adds Smarter Mobile Search

“Yahoo today becomes the first major search engine to allow people search the Web by talking to a mobile device.”

Las Vegas - Yahoo on Wednesday unveiled enhanced version of its “OneSearch” technology for mobile phones that allows users to initiate searches faster by speaking into their mobile phones. 

The announcement was made at the CTIA trade show here that it says make Version 2.0 voice-enabled searches for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices that deliver more information to queries than just links.

Apple, Fox Poised To Offer Fox Films Through iTunes

“Apple is reportedly planning to get into the movie rental business and license its digital rights management technology; and it could announce a deal within the next few weeks…”

iTunes will soon have movie rental option, if a report in a UK newspaper holds true. 20th Century Fox is said to be Apple’s first partner in the venture. Such a service would reportedly incorporate a DRM system that would allow the movies to be played for only a limited time after download, but would also allow them to be transferred to an iPhone or video-capable iPod. 

In a deal struck between the maker of the iPod gadget and News Corporation, the parent company of The Times and owner of Fox, consumers will be able to rent the latest Fox DVD releases by downloading a digital copy from Apple’s iTunes platform for a fixed period.

Google Draws Flak From Reader Group Over Privacy

Google learns from its Reader fiasco that sharing is not the same as caring…

“When Google launched its Reader service for reading blogs earlier this month; its corporate advertisement outrageously claimed ‘Reader and Talk are Friends!’”

On Dec. 14, Google announced that Reader, its RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed service, would link with contacts from Google Talk, the company’s instant messenger, and Gmail, its Web-based e-mail service. Any feed tagged to “Share” in Reader would be visible to any Talk or Gmail contact.

“It seems trying to make the Web more social is tricky for even Google, which prides itself on exercising caution before implementing new features that affect users…”

“Google must face a Wisconsin company’s lawsuit over a toolbar feature that generates Web links from search data, a federal appeals court decided in a ruling posted on Wednesday…”

Washington -- A federal appeals court handed Google Inc. a setback in a patent fight on Wednesday, tossing out part of a summary judgment in the Web search engine’s favor in a lawsuit filed by HyperPhrase Technologies, LLC.

Washington -- A venture led by the billionaire Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen has applied to bid in an upcoming U.S. auction of coveted wireless airwaves, according to auction documents released late on Tuesday.

“The list is in and, besides Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the auction applicants also included, as expected, Internet leader Google Inc. and U.S. wireless providers AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc. Also listed was Qualcomm Inc., among many others.”
