Petr Mitrichev of Russia to Take Home Top Prize in New York City

Google Inc. has announced that Petr Mitrichev won the recently held Global Code Jam competition and was awarded with a $10,000 first prize. Mitrichev topped a field of over 21,000 registered competitors from around the world, a record number for GCJ...

 Second place went to Ying Wang of the United States, while Andrey Stankevich of Russia came in third. Second through tenth places carry a cash prize of $5,000.

Adobe Tries Again With E-Books

New Adobe Flash-based Rich Internet Application (RIA) software is meant to be a simpler and more flexible for Managing and Reading eBooks and Other Digital Publications.

Adobe Systems Incorporated is scheduled to release a public beta of Adobe Digital Editions, a Rich Internet Application (RIA) built from the ground up for digital publishing at its Max 2006 customer conference in Las Vegas.

Like Yahoo, Google Adds Customized Search Engine

Web publishers can pick which keywords and sites to search, then color-coordinates results to match their motif.

Google Inc. is ready to let Web publishers and bloggers create custom searches on their sites, in a move that could make searches more relevant to consumers and allow the company to charge more for advertising, Google said in a statement.

With the Google Custom Search Engine, Web site and blog publishers can provide custom results most relevant to their readers, incorporating a site's online community and its ability to provide contextual ads...

Google Unveils AdWords Landing Page Testing Tool

In a move that could ruffle the feathers of some e-commerce Web site consultants and analytics software providers, Google has unveiled a site optimization tool that enables advertisers to test landing pages.

In its AdWords blog, Google outlined plans for beta testing of the company's new Website Optimizer tool. The service lets online sellers test separate landing page components such as headlines, product features and images to determine the page with the best conversion rates for websits. The new tool complements Google Analytics, a system for tracking AdWords campaign effectiveness.

Surprising Third-Quarter Report Contrasts with Rival Yahoo’s Doldrums
Internet giant Google said its third-quarter profits nearly doubled as revenues rose 70 percent, has increased its lead over its rival Yahoo! in the battle for the booming Internet advertising sector, driving its stocks up in trading with its results.

Its increasing share of the market contrasts starkly with the fate of advertising in the traditional media as several US newspaper groups, including the New York Times, announced a fall in revenue and the NBC television group decided to prioritize Internet over television broadcasts.

Yahoo to Acquire AdInterax

Internet search titan Yahoo announced a deal to buy video advertising specialty company AdInterax.

Yahoo, the California-based Internet search engine, is investing in Right Media Exchange and buying AdInterax, an online ad publisher.

Yahoo said AdInterax's technology would be offered in conjunction with its own online ad tools for behavioral targeting, geo-targeting and demo-targeting. AdInterax's software tools enable advertising agencies and publishers to create, manage, serve and measure online advertising.

Yahoo bolstered its ad services by acquiring AdInterax and buying one-fifth of Right Media. AdInterax is an online ad publisher. Right Media lets the search engine offer advertisers the ability to bid on Yahoo's non-premium inventory through an open and transparent marketplace.

Microsoft Acquires Colloquis to Enhance User Interactions Online

Microsoft announced a deal to buy Colloquis, a privately held firm specializing in virtual service agents programmed to answers questions online.

Microsoft Corp. lately announced that it has acquired privately owned Colloquis Inc., a maker of conversational online business solutions that feature natural language-processing technology. The company's software lets customers send Instant Messages that retrieve conversational answers through artificial intelligence programs.

The deal will allow Microsoft to offer new services based on Colloquis technology to businesses with online operations, giving it a platform and set of tools for building conversational capabilities into its software.

A Faux Fracas over Time Warner and YouTube

Warner exec says talks about content rights that began with YouTube will continue with its new owner.
Time Warner CEO Dick Parsons is negotiating with YouTube to deal with the problem of videos that infringe his company's copyrights, and now that Google's buying the video-sharing site, Parsons says he is going to move those negotiations to his company's partner, which owns a 5 percent stake in Time Warne's AOL unit.

“You can assume we are in negotiations with YouTube and that those negotiations will be kicked up to the Google level in the hope that we can get to some acceptable position,” Parsons told The Guardian.

Google Signs Sony BMG and Warner Video Deals

Google said it has signed deals with Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group to stream free music videos on its Google video Web site.

Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Google lately announced a strategic business relationship designed to make the music company's expansive music video collection available for online streaming at no cost to users.

Starting this month, Google will offer free music videos on its Google video Web site from Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group; users will also be able to access content from Sony BMG Music Entertainment artists through Google's partner websites in its AdSense network.

Palm and Google Collaborate to Bring Google Maps to Treo Smartphones

Palm Inc. recently announced the Palm Treo 680 smart-phones that will deliver the popular interactive mapping experience of Google Maps to millions of users. The new Treo aims to meet growing demand for devices with multimedia capabilities that receive e-mail wirelessly, let users listen to digital music, download podcasts and handle other features beyond talk.

The company said it would begin a 25 million-dollar marketing campaign to expand demand for the product beyond its base of business users.
