Google and Opera Make a Mobile Search Connection

Google will supply the default search function for Opera Software's mobile browsers, the company announced. Opera Software supplies two separate browsers for mobile and wireless devices.

Opera Software's Opera Mini browser, a mobile browser is due for formal unveiling next month.

In a statement, Opera said: "Google will be the default search partner for the mobile browsers: Opera Mobile and Opera Mini."

 The one-year agreement with Google, unveiled recently, also calls for Google to be the default search engine for Opera Mobile, a cell phone Web browser now available from Opera.

Google Talk Faces Patent Lawsuit

Google Inc.'s instant message and Internet phone feature, Google Talk, has been hit by patent infringement allegations.

Google Talk is the search giant's combination of instant messaging and VOIP (voice over IP).

Rates Technology Inc (RTI) has brought a case against Google in New York. The patent-holding company claims that two of its patents, dating back to 1991 and 1995, have been infringed. Both relate to technology designed to minimizing the cost of calls over the internet...

Microsoft Looks Beyond AOL

AOL deal loss is not the end of the search affair says the Redmond Vole!

Time Warner has chosen Google as the most suitable partner for its America Online Internet unit--but the game isn't over for jilted suitor Microsoft.

Microsoft plans to leverage its desktop market dominance to compete with Google on search and advertising, analysts said - despite losing out to Google in the race to become the partner for Time Warner's AOL unit.

After spending much of this year wooing AOL in an attempt to get its search business, the Redmond, Washington, software giant was pipped at the post by Google. Google and AOL announced that Google will invest $1bn for a five per cent stake in AOL under a broad partnership that expands their existing search engine deal to include collaboration on advertising, instant messaging and video.

Google Can Sell AOL Stake As Early As July 2008

Time Warner can buy back shares under pending $1 billion deal

Google Inc., the online media giant, will be able to sell its pending 5 per cent stake in Time Warner Inc.'s AOL internet unit as early as July 2008 according to Google's recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The search advertising company should see a quick turnaround for its $1 billion investment in Time Warner's AOL, as SEC filings from Google indicate.

Google Says No Plan To Up Stake In China’s Baidu

Web search leader Google Inc. said that it may not raise its small stake in China's top search engine Baidu.com, even as competition rises in the fast growing sector.

Google owns 2.6 percent of Baidu, and was believed to be seeking to boost its stake prior to the Chinese company's hugely successful initial public offering in August.

We have a very small stake in the company, which is a strategic investment that was made a while back, but as far as I know there aren't any plans beyond that, Daniel Alegre, the director of international Websearch & Syndication, told reporters on the sidelines of a conference.

Microsoft and Google End Legal Fight Over Employee

Microsoft and Google reached an agreement to settle the dispute on Google's employment of Mircrosoft's former employee Lee Kai-Fu.

Microsoft sued Google, claiming it had violated non-competition agreements after it poached Lee, who was the head of its research operation in China.

Google counter-sued saying that it had done nothing wrong and that Microsoft was using the legal system to act unfairly.

Blinkx.tv comes to iPods and Portable Video Players

Blinkx has unveiled a new service called Blinkx.tv To Go that lets users search for video content online and upload results to their iPod or portable video player.

Users also will be able to save the search as a "channel" that is automatically updated and saved for later viewing when new, relevant content is posted online.

Over the past several months, said Suranga Chandratillake, CTO and founder of blinkx, video blogging has exploded on the Internet, suggesting that many consumers are eager for an alternative to commercial broadcasts.

Google to Open Research Facility in Pittsburgh

Online Search Engine Google to Open New Research Facility in Pittsburgh
Internet search provider Google Inc. said it will open a research and development facility in Pittsburgh next year and has chosen a Carnegie Mellon University robotics professor to run it.

The facility will be charged with creating software search tools for Google. It is expected to create as many as 100 new high-tech jobs in the Pittsburgh area over the next few years, said Craig Nevill-Manning, director of Google's New York engineering office.
